Spring Skiing: Slopeside Homes in Top-Ranked Mountain Resorts

Luxury Defined spotlights a collection of log cabins and mountain chalets in some of the world’s best resorts for skiing in springtime

Spring is finally here, and while most of us are looking forward to the warm, sunny days ahead, spare a thought for those who’ll lament the melting of the snowpack: skiers and snowboarders, freestylers and freeriders, schussboomers and shredders, and all who love to slip, slide, rip, and ride the white powder wave.

The good news: Spring ski season has arrived and with it a fresh vintage of champagne powder or a new crop of corn snow ripening on and off the piste. Expect bluebird days (that’s clear, blue skies), few crowds, and, best of all, no lines at the chair lifts and the smart après-ski watering holes.

Herewith, Luxury Defined heads slopeside in this property showcase of log cabins and mountain chalets in top-ranked destinations for spring skiing. It’s time to ditch the down jacket and boot heaters and don the sunglasses and the SPF for ski season’s last hoorah, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway. Powder hounds can always head down south to the Andes or the Southern Alps for another round of winter!

1. Mountain Village Ski Retreat in Big Sky, Montana

Ski home
Located in Big Sky Resort’s Mountain Village, this elegant log home has direct ski-in, ski-out access to some of the best powder slopes in the West.

Perched within the pines of Montana’s Big Sky Resort, this newly constructed log home offers immediate ski-out access to the Mountain Village and the resort’s vast skiable terrain—famous for its challenging powder runs, spectacular Rocky Mountain vistas, and few crowds.

The 4,356-square-foot floor plan provides four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms. There’s also a cozy family room with six built-in bunks and a wet bar.

The living room, on the home’s second level, has a dining space and an expansive chef’s kitchen under a beautiful, beamed ceiling. A balcony walkway connects to the primary suite and its private deck. An additional deck and a private patio each offer a panoramic view of the Rockies. A ski room with a separate entrance completes the amenities.

Four-season recreation starts at the back door with direct access to the skiing, hiking, and biking trails of Big Sky Resort. There’s a panoply of restaurants, spas, and other recreational opportunities, all of it an hour’s drive to Yellowstone National Park.

Mountain home
The world-class slopes of Idaho’s Sun Valley Resort—“America’s First Destination Ski Resort”—are on display from the decks of this three-bedroom townhouse, minutes from downtown Ketchum.

Sun Valley is best known for its winter sports, but it’s gaining a reputation as a year-round destination, offering a range of outdoor pursuits, such as blue-ribbon fly-fishing, golf, rock climbing, hiking, biking, and river rafting. The annual summer classical concert series at the Sun Valley Music Festival and the region’s designation as an official Dark Sky Reserve further the allure.

French ski chalet
Nestled between Lake Annecy and Mont Blanc, Le Grand-Bornand is the "Pearl of the Aravis Mountains," with more than 55 miles of downhill ski runs, 30 lifts, an ice park, and expansive terrain for Nordic skiing.

The lower level offers a spacious bedroom suite with a balcony, bathroom, and dressing room, and a sublime wellness area comprising a hammam, relaxing “sensory shower,” and spa pool.
